It rises at Thames Head in Gloucestershire, and flows into the North Sea [River Avon, Bristol] building. Alongside the lock is a pub, whose garden extends over the lock to the small island between the lock and weir. The lock was opened in 1727 and [River Avon, Warwickshire] locks and weirs. The Stratford-upon-Avon Canal links to the Avon through a lock in the park in front of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon [River Windrush] Guiting, Ford and Cutsdean. It flows for about 35 miles (56 km): through Bourton-on-the-Water, by the village of Windrush, Gloucestershire, into Oxfordshire [River Severn] to enable seagoing boats to reach as far as Stourport.
