Outram set out to overcome the problems with the Holmes Aqueduct by making the walls thicker [Burnley Embankment] any point along its length. This is known as "The Culvert", although it is an aqueduct not a culvert. This was originally constructed in 1797 as a single [Cromford Mill] of Mill Road to the aqueduct. Both then supplied the second mill. In 1785 the mill was extended to its present length with a culvert beneath for the Bonsall [Hatherton Canal] between Gains Lane and Cadman's Lane crosses the route, and this will be partially re-routed along the towpath. A farm track then crosses a culvert, both of [River Medlock] Baring Street, close to Piccadilly station, before running again in a culvert beneath the former University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology
