[River Soar] Lock The River Soar (/sɔːr/) is a major tributary of the River Trent in the English East Midlands and is the principal river of Leicestershire. The source [Grand Union Canal] Norton Junction for about 35 miles (56 km) until it reaches Leicester, where it joins the River Soar to provide a link to the River Trent and to the Trent [Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station] Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station is a coal-fired power station owned and operated by Uniper at Ratcliffe-on-Soar in Nottinghamshire, England. Commissioned [Stanford Viaduct] skewed to allow the Soar to pass underneath. When the rest of the GCML was closed in the 1960s, the section from Loughborough South Junction was kept open [Grand Union Canal (old)] the Grand Junction Canal. It now forms the first 23 miles (37 km) of the Leicester Section, a branch of the much bigger modern Grand Union Canal. The [Midland Main Line] Hawes station, on the branch to the east of the main line, there was an end-on junction with the North Eastern Railway (NER) line across the Pennines to Northallerton [Trent and Mersey Canal] set of double locks on the T&M Hardings Wood Junction with the Hall Green Branch On the Cheshire stretch of the canal, between Middlewich and the northern [Charnwood Forest Canal] However, in 1778, the Loughborough Canal opened up the River Soar from the Trent to Loughborough, and the opening of the Erewash Canal the following year [West Coast Main Line] on this branch is the oldest flyover-type junction in use.
