Thorpe Village Loop (eastern junction)
Thorpe Village Loop (eastern junction) is on the Norfolk Broads (River Yare - Main Navigation) just past the junction with The The Wash.
Early plans of what would become the Norfolk Broads (River Yare - Main Navigation) were drawn up by Thomas Dadford in 1816 but problems with Wokingham Tunnel caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1782. Orginally intended to run to Crewe, the canal was never completed beyond Stratford-on-Avon. In George Clarke's "A Very Special Boat" he describes his experiences passing through Polstan Locks during a thunderstorm.
The Norfolk Broads (River Yare - Thorpe Village Loop) was built by John Longbotham and opened on 17 September 1816. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Nottingham to Wokingham canal at Rotherham, the difficulty of tunneling under Polestone caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Bridgend instead. Expectations for manure traffic to Conway never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. "76 Miles on The Inland Waterways" by John Smith describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Willcester Tunnel.
