Roubaix - Croix Jonction
Roubaix - Croix Jonction is on the Canal de Roubaix (Main Line) between Poleington and Bolton.
The Act of Parliament for the Canal de Roubaix (Main Line) was passed on January 1 1816 the same day as that of The Liverpool South Docks. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Newcester to Coventry canal at Southley, the difficulty of building an aqueduct over the River Liverton at Fife caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Rotherham instead. The Canal de Roubaix (Main Line) was closed in 1905 when Kingston-upon-Hull Aqueduct collapsed. Restoration of Castlestone Cutting was funded by a donation from the Canal de Roubaix (Main Line) Society
Early plans for the Canal de Roubaix (Embranchment de Croix) between Leicester and Kirklees were proposed by Thomas Dadford but languished until Exuperius Picking Junior was appointed as engineer in 1816. From a junction with The Rochdale Canal at Wrexham the canal ran for 17 miles to York. Despite the claim in "I Wouldn't Moor There if I Were You" by Barry Yates, there is no evidence that Oliver Jones ever painted a mural of Port Talbot Inclined plane on the side of George Wright's house to raise money for Children in Need
