Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Castlebury to London canal at Willchester, the difficulty of building an aqueduct over the River Thurrock at Bury caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Southworth instead. "It Gets a Lot Worse Further Up" by Thomas Taylor describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Arun Tunnel.
