The Evans family lived locally at Griff House [[7689854]]. Robert himself was a Derbyshire man, [[46773]], who became the estate manager at Arbury Hall near Nuneaton; the family worshipped at All Saints, their parish church. After his wife's death, Robert Evans lived with Mary Ann at Bird Grove in Foleshill, outside Coventry [[7355931]]. A robust countryman and a devout Church of England man, Robert's relations with his independent-minded and increasingly freethinking daughter became strained [[6968205]]. ![Monument to German prisoners of war, All Saints churchyard, Chilvers Coton. They rebuilt the church that had been destroyed by their compatriots in 1941, some of them staying on longer than required, in order to complete the job. Did they carve this inscription, too? There is an odd Germanism in the text, 'the work im churchyard' (die Arbeit im Kirchhof...) One was talented in wood carving; his work can be seen inside the church. The prisoner-of-war camp was nearby, in the grounds of Arbury Hall. The monument itself is situated a little to the west of the church tower. The church has strong associations with George Eliot; her parents' tomb is also close by. ![Pearson Evans family graves, Chilvers Coton churchyard. Isaac Pearson Evans was the elder brother of Mary Ann Evans, better known as George Eliot; their parents are also buried in the churchyard [[8222262]]. Isaac succeeded Robert as the patriarch of Griff House [[7689854]]; he shared his father's staunch Christian faith, which brought him into conflict with his freethinking literary sister. He broke off relations with her, cutting her off from her Warwickshire family, in response to her extra-marital relationship in London with George Henry Lewes, who had been unable to obtain a divorce. Only after Lewes' death and George Eliot's marriage to John Walter Cross did Isaac end the breach, but by then she had only a few months to live. When I visited the churchyard in 2019 on a tour of the Eliot sites by the George Eliot Fellowship, the tour guides represented old Isaac as the villain of the piece. His gravestone needs some support to stay upright. On the church, where the family worshipped, see [[7120569]]. Eliot herself is buried in London, in Highgate Cemetery [[5876600]]; her scandalous life and rejection of Christian orthodoxy ruled out burial in Westminster Abbey, despite her stature as a writer, though a plaque in her memory was later placed there. On Eliot's life, see Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Eliot . by A J Paxton – 05 October 2025](https://s2.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/08/22/23/8222318_8c0be760_120x120.jpg)
