![Looking over to Vaudrey's Wharf. Looking across the Macclesfield Canal to the old docking area, trains will have climbed the incline from the former Biddulph Valley Railway ([[2166767]]), now used by the Biddulph Valley Way, and will have loaded or unloaded cargoes to and from narrowboats. This wharf was built in 1835 by Charles Vaudrey to serve his nearby mills, in 1860 after the completion of the Biddulph Valley Line it became an important interchange between the two different types of transportation. In 2008 a leak was discovered which could result in this historic wharf being sealed, or stanked, off from the main canal ( http://www.macclesfieldcanal.org.uk/vaudreyswharf.htm ). So far it is still open, but I am unable to find any information as to whether the seepage has been fixed. The Macclesfield Canal was one of the last narrow canals to be built and runs approximately 28 miles from Harding's Wood Junction on the Trent and Mersey Canal, along the edge of the western Pennine hills to Marple Junction on the Peak Forest Canal. It was surveyed by Thomas Telford with construction starting in 1826, with William Crosley doing the engineering. The canal opened in November 1831 having cost a total of £320,000. by Jonathan Kington – 17 November 2010](https://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/02/16/70/2167020_5cea03f2_120x120.jpg)

![Looking down the incline. Although overgrown with bushes and trees it is not hard, with a bit of imagination, to see where the spur line climbed from the Biddulph Valley Railway to Vaudrey's Wharf beside the Macclesfield Canal (see [[2166767]] and [[2167020]]). The wharf allowed an important interchange between the two modes of transport, with the trains carrying goods to and from the canal. by Jonathan Kington – 17 November 2010](https://s2.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/02/16/84/2168450_ab4605e7_120x120.jpg)

![After the aqueduct. Almost immediately after passing under the aqueduct ([[2166944]]) carrying the Macclesfield Canal over the Biddulph Valley Way there is evidence of another spur line leaving the former Biddulph Valley Railway, this one would have climbed to join the mainline between Congleton and Macclesfield.
