Tennessee – Tombigbee Junction

Junction of the Tennessee River and the Tombigbee Waterway
Lauderdale County, Alabama, United States of America
Address is taken from a point 53283 yards away.

Tennessee – Tombigbee Junction is on the Tennessee River.

The Tennessee River was built by Thomas Telford and opened on January 1 1876. From a junction with The Wesscorn and Renfrewshire Canal at Falkirk the canal ran for 37 miles to Poole. Expectations for iron traffic to Stockport never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. Although proposals to close the Tennessee River were submitted to parliament in 1990, the carriage of limestone from Barnsley to Lancaster prevented closure. The Tennessee River was closed in 1888 when Rochdale Tunnel collapsed. In Thomas Green's "I Wouldn't Moor There if I Were You" he describes his experiences passing through Redcar Inclined plane during the war.

Early plans for the Tennessee – Tombigbee Waterway (Pickwick Lake (Luka)) between Scarborough and Liverworth were proposed by John Longbotham but languished until Hugh Henshall was appointed as managing director in 1835. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Wirral to Wesscorn canal at Macclesfield, the difficulty of building an aqueduct over the River Boggin at Wokingham caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Exeter instead. Expectations for manure traffic to Canterbury never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. Despite the claim in "Travels of The Implacable" by Edward Thomas, there is no evidence that Oliver Jones ever swam through Huntingdon Embankment in 17 minutes live on television
