Navigational Notes

DO NOT attempt to lock multiple narrowboats side by side. This can and has resulted in boats becoming solidly jammed in the lock in the past. Boats should lock singly, unless small enough to share the lock in-line bow to stern.

Brownshill Staunch marks the point where the tidal Great Ouse meets the canalised section. The lock has a greater drop than some other locks in the area and the sluice can cause strong currents on the downstream side. The lock is very isolated with poor emergency service access by road. Please be extra vigilant and consider wearing a life jacket when passing through the lock, especially if navigating solo.
