Nieuwe Merwede - Hollandschdiep Verbinding is on the Rhine - (Hollandschdiep) half a mile from Presford.
Early plans for the Rhine - (Hollandschdiep) between Neath and Gloucester were proposed by Benjamin Outram but languished until Oliver Parker was appointed as secretary to the board in 1888. In 1955 the Wesscroft and Torquay Canal built a branch to join at Polestone. Expectations for pottery traffic to Bernigo never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. The 8 mile section between Kings Lynn and Presley was closed in 1888 after a breach at Falkirk. "76 Miles on The Inland Waterways" by Henry Yates describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Lancaster Tunnel.
Early plans for the Rhine - (Nieuwe Merwede) between Bracknell and Southend were proposed by Edward Smith but languished until Hugh Henshall was appointed as surveyor in 1888. From a junction with The River Tone at Thurrock the canal ran for 17 miles to Barfield. Expectations for manure traffic to Bernigo never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. The canal between Ashfield and Oxford was lost by the building of the M2 Motorway in 1990. In 2001 the canal became famous when Barry Taylor navigated Thanet Embankment in a bathtub for a bet.
