[Wigan] population. Wigan became a major mill town and coal mining district; at its peak, there were 1,000 pit shafts within 5 miles (8 km) of the town centre. Coal mining [Haigh Hall] made from seams of cannel and coal under the estate which were mined from before 1536. The Lindsays founded the Wigan Coal and Iron Company, which became [Liverpool and Manchester Railway] Liverpool and Manchester Railway (L&MR) was the first inter-city railway in the world. It opened on 15 September 1830 between the Lancashire towns of Liverpool [Parsonage Colliery] centre of Leigh and the Bolton and Leigh Railway was sunk between 1913 and 1920 by the Wigan Coal and Iron Company and the first coal was wound to the [Haigh, Greater Manchester] Earls of Crawford and Balcarres, founded the Wigan Coal and Iron Company in 1865. Collieries in Haigh belonging the Wigan Coal and Iron Company in 1896 [Hart Common] of the century. In the 1870s, plans for large coal mines across Westhoughton were made - notably the sinking of two shafts by the Wigan Coal and Iron [Maesteg] district near the head of the valley in 1830. The railway opened up the district and led to the formation of an iron company which began building a works [St Helens and Runcorn Gap Railway] St Helens and Runcorn Gap Railway, later known as St Helens Railway, was an early railway company in Lancashire, England, which opened in 1833.
