Work began clearing the site for the new colliery at Oakdale with the sinking of the pit in 1907. Waterloo shaft followed [Westoe, South Tyneside] physician Dr Thomas Winterbottom, as well as barrister and politician Robert Ingham are buried in the cemetery. Westoe became locally famous as the inspiration [Tahmoor, New South Wales] region. The Tahmoor Colliery, located to the south in North Bargo, is an important employer in the town and surrounding area, as is Ingham's Enterprises, who [Ossett] 1719) was a cloth/feltmaker. His mother was Sarah, née Ingham, the daughter of Gervase Ingham, a member of a well known land-owning Ossett family. Vincent [Newburn] Newburn FC as a boy John Ingham, footballer, played for Newburn AFC for a time Jim Mackey, footballer, played for Newburn Colliery FC Andy Thompson, footballer [Temple Newsam] estate at Thorpe Stapleton. The colliery was named Waterloo to commemorate the famous battle of that year. Waterloo Colliery was operated as a royalty concession [1946 New Year Honours (British Empire Medal)] Company).
