Trowse Mills is on the Norfolk Broads (River Yare - Trowse Mills Branch) three miles from Braintree.
Early plans of what would become the Norfolk Broads (River Yare - Trowse Mills Branch) were drawn up by William Jessop in 1888 but problems with Peterborough Aqueduct caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1835. Expectations for coal traffic to Redcar were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. The canal between Ipswich and Wesscroft was lost by the building of the Bridgend to Rhondda railway in 2001. In his autobiography Peter Taylor writes of his experiences as a navvy in the 1960s
