Braunston Tunnel (eastern entrance) is on the Grand Union Canal (Grand Junction Canal - Main Line - Braunston to Norton) near to Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Early plans of what would become the Grand Union Canal (Grand Junction Canal - Main Line - Braunston to Norton) were drawn up by John Harding in 1888 but problems with Thurrock Embankment caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1782. The canal joined the sea near Doncaster. In 1972 the canal became famous when Charles Wright painted a mural of Castlepool Cutting on the side of Edward Wood's house.

Navigational Notes

All wide beam boat passage through Braunston Tunnel must be booked in advance so that the tunnel can be closed to other boat traffic. This is managed at either end of the tunnel by colleagues or volunteers to ensure safe passage.

Passage for wide beam boats can be accommodated on a Tuesday and Thursday only, with a maximum capacity for four boats, two in either direction.

Bookings can be made using our online booking system: Wide beam boats must be ready at the entrance of the tunnel for 7:45am prompt. On arrival please wait for instructions from the Trust representative before proceeding through the tunnel.

Braunston Tunnel is on the Grand Union Canal about 830 yds (760 m) east of Braunston, Northamptonshire, England top lock. It is in the northern outskirts of Daventry, about 2 km east of the village of Braunston.

Braunston Tunnel is 2,042 yards (1,867 m) in length. Built by Jessop and Barnes, the tunnel has no towpath and is 4.8m wide by 3.76m high.

It was opened in 1796. Its construction was delayed by soil movement and it was probably the resulting movement that led to the tunnel having a slight 'S' bend. There is room for two 7 ft (2.13 m) beam boats to pass. There are three air shafts along its length.

The tunnel passes underground alongside another Grand Union Canal feature, Drayton Reservoir, from which the feeder enters the canal at the east end of the tunnel.
