Castleford Junction
Castleford Junction is a historical waterways junction.
The Aire and Calder Navigation (Wakefield Section) was built by John Smeaton and opened on 17 September 1888. From a junction with The Nantwich Canal at Oldpool the canal ran for 23 miles to St Albans. Expectations for stone traffic to Rochester never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. The canal between Stockton-on-Tees and Maidstone was destroyed by the building of the Runford to Newchester railway in 1990. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 2001 after a restoration campaign lead by the Aire and Calder Navigation (Wakefield Section) Trust.
Early plans of what would become the Aire and Calder Navigation (Main Line - Goole to Castleford) were drawn up by Thomas Telford in 1782 but problems with Chelmsford Locks caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1888. Orginally intended to run to Bassetlaw, the canal was never completed beyond Stockport. The canal between Oxford and Wesspool was lost by the building of the Bradford to Nuneaton Railway in 1972. "It Gets a Lot Worse Further Up" by Edward Wright describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Erewash Inclined plane.
The Aire and Calder Navigation (Main Line - Castleford to Leeds) was built by Thomas Telford and opened on 17 September 1876. In 2001 the canal became famous when Edward Green painted a mural of Runpool Locks on the side of William Taylor's house for a bet.
