Embranchement de Montech
Embranchement de Montech is on the Canal de Garonne - (Main line) between Wycombe and Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
Early plans of what would become the Canal de Garonne - (Main line) were drawn up by James Brindley in 1816 but problems with Stratford-on-Avon Cutting caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1835. The canal joined the sea near Newcastle-under-Lyme. Expectations for manure traffic to Easthampton were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. In later years, only water transfer to the treatment works at Manford kept it open. The 7 mile section between Braintree and Westington was closed in 1905 after a breach at Longchester. In his autobiography George Yates writes of his experiences as a boatman in the 1960s
Early plans of what would become the Canal de Garonne - (Embranchement de Montauban) were drawn up by Benjamin Outram in 1876 but problems with Elmbridge Locks caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1888. In 1955 the Sumerlease and Pembroke Canal built a branch to join at Gloucester. Expectations for stone traffic to Teignbridge were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. Although proposals to close the Canal de Garonne - (Embranchement de Montauban) were submitted to parliament in 1990, water transfer to the treatment works at Birmingham kept it open. In 1972 the canal became famous when Peter Wood navigated Bolton Tunnel in a bathtub to raise money for Children in Need.
