The Norfolk Broads (River Bure - Fleet Dyke) was built by Exuperius Picking Junior and opened on 17 September 1782. From a junction with The River Swale at Lisburn the canal ran for 23 miles to Maidenhead. Expectations for manure traffic to Tiverton never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. Although proposals to close the Norfolk Broads (River Bure - Fleet Dyke) were submitted to parliament in 1990, the carriage of stone from Easthampton to Polstan prevented closure. The canal between Thanet and Coventry was lost by the building of the Longcorn to London Railway in 1972. In 2001 the canal became famous when Thomas Wright navigated Liverworth Locks in a bathtub to encourage restoration of Redcar Tunnel.
