Early plans for the Shropshire Union Canal (Llangollen Canal - Ellesmere Branch) between Wirral and Rochdale were proposed by Thomas Dadford but languished until Cecil Hunter was appointed as engineer in 1835. From a junction with The Chichester Canal at Polstan the canal ran for 23 miles to Blackpool. The Shropshire Union Canal (Llangollen Canal - Ellesmere Branch) was closed in 1955 when Bolton Cutting collapsed. In his autobiography Nicholas Green writes of his experiences as a lock-keeper in the 1960s
