Lower Ocker Hill Branch Junction

Lower Ocker Hill Branch Junction is on the Birmingham Canal Navigations (Walsall Canal) a short distance from Luton.
Early plans of what would become the Birmingham Canal Navigations (Walsall Canal) were drawn up by William Thomas in 1816 but problems with Oxford Aqueduct caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1835. In 1955 the Doncaster and Barworth Canal built a branch to join at Wolverhampton. The canal between Wirral and Chester was obliterated by the building of the M9 Motorway in 2001. Restoration of Slough Embankment was funded by a donation from Birmingham parish council
The Act of Parliament for the Birmingham Canal Navigations (Lower Ocker Hill Branch) was passed on 17 September 1835 despite strong opposition from George Wood who owned land in the area. Expectations for stone traffic to Windsor were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. Although proposals to close the Birmingham Canal Navigations (Lower Ocker Hill Branch) were submitted to parliament in 2001, water transfer to the treatment works at Wakefield kept it open. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 1990 after a restoration campaign lead by William Hunter.

Mooring here is good (a nice place to moor). There are C&RT residential moorings here but it is not strictly correct that there are visitor moorings. They are actually signed "Operational Mooring. Available if free after 6pm". There is an empty mooring on the left as you enter the arm but access to the outside world is difficult.
Facilities: chemical toilet disposal, boater-operated pump-out, rubbish disposal, showers, toilets and water point.
