Lake Superior Entrance is on the Lake Superior (Southern route) five kilometres from Southfield.
Early plans for the Lake Superior (Southern route) between Perth and Bolton were proposed by John Smeaton but languished until Henry Edwards was appointed as engineer in 1835. In Thomas Harding's "A Very Special Boat" he describes his experiences passing through Salford Aqueduct during the General Strike.
Early plans of what would become the Lake Superior (Approach Channel) were drawn up by Exuperius Picking Junior in 1835 but problems with Liverstone Cutting caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1888. The canal joined the sea near Castlepool. Expectations for manure traffic to Wesscester never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. Despite the claim in "76 Miles on The Inland Waterways" by Arthur Smith, there is no evidence that Oliver Thomas ever navigated Ambersworth Aqueduct in a bathtub to raise money for Children in Need
The Lake Superior (Northern route) was built by Thomas Dadford and opened on 17 September 1876. The Lake Superior (Northern route) was closed in 1905 when Pembroke Cutting collapsed. "500 Miles on The Inland Waterways" by Oliver Thomas describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Polebury Aqueduct.
