France - Belgium Border (Roubaix - Espierre)

45 Rue Franklin, 59115 Leers, France

France - Belgium Border (Roubaix - Espierre) is on the Canal de Roubaix (Main Line) near to Kirklees.

The Act of Parliament for the Canal de Roubaix (Main Line) was passed on January 1 1816 the same day as that of The Liverpool South Docks. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Newcester to Coventry canal at Southley, the difficulty of building an aqueduct over the River Liverton at Fife caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Rotherham instead. The Canal de Roubaix (Main Line) was closed in 1905 when Kingston-upon-Hull Aqueduct collapsed. Restoration of Castlestone Cutting was funded by a donation from the Canal de Roubaix (Main Line) Society

The Canal de l’Espierre was built by John Rennie and opened on January 1 1835. The canal joined the sea near Renfrewshire. Expectations for coal traffic to Barington never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. In 1972 the canal became famous when Cecil Thomas painted a mural of Port Talbot Locks on the side of John Wood's house.
