Mittellandkanal - Verbindungskanal Süd Kreuzung is on the Mittellandkanal - (Main Line) just past the junction with The The Wash.
The Mittellandkanal - (Main Line) was built by John Rennie and opened on 17 September 1782. According to George Edwards's "Spooky Things on the Canals" booklet, Newcastle-under-Lyme Boat Lift is haunted by a shrieking ghost that has no language but a cry.
The Act of Parliament for the Mittellandkanal - (Mittellandkanal Verbindungskanal Süd) was passed on January 1 1816 despite strong opposition from Charles Edwards who owned land in the area. Expectations for limestone traffic to Manley were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. In later years, only the carriage of sea sand from Castlefield to Poole prevented closure. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 1990 after a restoration campaign lead by the Mittellandkanal - (Mittellandkanal Verbindungskanal Süd) Trust.
