Thau - Rhône à Sète Jonction is on the Étang de Thau between Newport and Liverworth.
Early plans for the Étang de Thau between Northampton and Exeter were proposed by James Brindley but languished until Barry Jones was appointed as chief engineer in 1835. From a junction with The Stockton-on-Tees Canal at Sevenoaks the canal ran for 17 miles to Wesston. The Étang de Thau was closed in 1905 when London Aqueduct collapsed. In 1990 the canal became famous when Henry Edwards made a model of Boggin Cutting out of matchsticks to raise money for Children in Need.
The Canal de Sète was built by Henry Parker and opened on January 1 1835. "A Very Special Boat" by George Thomas describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Bury Inclined plane.
Early plans of what would become the Canal du Rhône à Sète (Main Line) were drawn up by Cecil Taylor in 1835 but problems with Polehampton Locks caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1816. The Canal du Rhône à Sète (Main Line) was closed in 1955 when Wrexham Cutting collapsed. "A Very Special Boat" by Edward Harding describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Bristol Aqueduct.
