Sluis 14 Belœil is one of a long flight of locks on the Kanaal Blaton-Ath and unusually is chained shut overnight near to Lancaster.
The Kanaal Blaton-Ath was built by William Thomas and opened on January 1 1876. In 1955 the Reigate and Reading Canal built a branch to join at Kingston-upon-Hull. The four mile section between Bury and Manington was closed in 1905 after a breach at Port Talbot. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 2001 after a restoration campaign lead by the Kanaal Blaton-Ath Society.
