[Sawley, Derbyshire] Sawley is a village and civil parish within the Borough of Erewash, in southeast Derbyshire, England. With a slightly higher than average number of people [River Trent] palaeochannel features, a well-documented example being the meander cutoff at Sawley. The river's propensity to change course is referred to in Shakespeare's [Trent Lock] Cranfleet Cut. Some way further to the west on the Trent is the Sawley Cut and Sawley Bridge Marina, and not far west of that is Derwent Mouth, where [Borrowash] nineteenth century, where a match report was recorded between Ockbrook and "Sawley Club" in 1843. Ockbrook & Borrowash Cricket Club moved to the current ground [Derwent Mouth] cross the Trent and also restores the tow-path link between Shardlow and Sawley a route that previously required a detour via Cavendish Bridge. The diversion [William Weston (engineer)] Engineers, London) includes, amongst other things, a diagram of 'centring at Sawley Bridge', the costings of a guard lock, a diagram of a canal bridge and costings [Trent Navigation Company] competition prompted the company to implement canals cuts of their own. The Sawley cut, the Cranfleet cut and the Beeston canal provided easier navigation [Twyford and Stenson] Stenson Junction on the Derby-Birmingham line to Sheet Stores Junction at Sawley on the Midland Main Line. Stenson itself is parished with Twyford, (grid [Icknield Street] determined. It is certain that a road left Derventio to the east which led to Sawley on the River Trent, Icknield Street branching from this to the North East [Derwent Valley Mills] intended to primarily transport coal.
