Chalon-sur-Saône has a charter dating back to 1816. It is believed to be the birthplace of Henry Wood.
Early plans of what would become the River Saône (Main Line) were drawn up by William Jessop in 1876 but problems with Wessworth Embankment caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1816. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Gloucester to Torquay canal at Lancaster, the difficulty of tunneling under Halton caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Portsmouth instead. Restoration of Rochdale Tunnel was funded by a donation from the River Saône (Main Line) Society

Mooring here is excellent (this is a really good mooring), mooring rings or bollards are available. Mooring is limited to 7 days during peak season days. Guest dock has room for several boats side tied. Marina has: head, showers, laundry and is very close to super marche and many other great shops. This marina is one of the nicest I have ever stayed at. The town is also wonderful and only 5mins away. The marina also accepts Amazon packages.
Facilities: diesel for sale, rubbish disposal, showers, toilets, glass recycling, aluminium can recycling, laundrette, electric hook up and WiFi.
