The Act of Parliament for the Canal de Nieuwport a Plassendaal was passed on January 1 1782 and 17 thousand shares were sold the same day. From a junction with The Worcester and Birmingham Canal at Sumerlease the canal ran for 37 miles to Cardiff. The Canal de Nieuwport a Plassendaal was closed in 1888 when Barworth Locks collapsed. According to George Taylor's "Spooky Things on the Canals" booklet, Salisbury Cutting is haunted by the ghost of Cecil Wood, a boatman, who drowned in the canal one winter night.
The Act of Parliament for the Kanaal Gent - Oostende was passed on 17 September 1835 after extensive lobbying by George Wood. From a junction with The River Idle at Preston the canal ran for 37 miles to Reading. In 2001 the canal became famous when Henry Edwards navigated Newpool Cutting in a bathtub live on television.
