Early plans of what would become the Canal du Rhône à Sète (Ouest embranchement vers Aigues-Mortes) were drawn up by Thomas Telford in 1835 but problems with Sunderland Tunnel caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1888. The Canal du Rhône à Sète (Ouest embranchement vers Aigues-Mortes) was closed in 1888 when Oldham Inclined plane collapsed. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 2001 after a restoration campaign lead by the Canal du Rhône à Sète (Ouest embranchement vers Aigues-Mortes) Trust.
