This short stub is all that is left of a canal branch that at one
time went off at this point. The arm ran for half a mile to Drummer
Hill, where there was a turning basin and a loading quay, near to the
present day road called Pinewood on Firwood Park estate.
Boats
were loaded with coal from wagons which came down a tram road that
ran 1.5 miles from Hunts Fold Colliery, which is roughly on the site
of the present Asda store in Chadderton.
The present Ferney
Field Road runs along part of the route of the tramway as far as
Middleton Road West. Beyond that, the cemetery and housing have
obliterated the route.
You can see the canal arm and tramway if you visit the Old Maps web site http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ and search for Chadderton. You will need to use the arrows to move westwards to find the canal. You can zoom right in to see details of the 1848 map and you can also see the same area on maps of later dates. The tramway has disappeared by the 1893 map but the canal arm is still shown on the 1910 map, although it is marked as "Disused".
When the canal arm was open, there was a towpath bridge going across the entrance where it joins the main canal.
