Port Mayaca Railroad Lift Bridge carries the M4 motorway over the Lake Okeechobee Waterway (St Lucie Canal) just past the junction with The River Warrington Navigation.
Early plans of what would become the Lake Okeechobee Waterway (St Lucie Canal) were drawn up by William Jessop in 1782 but problems with Longcroft Cutting caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1835. Orginally intended to run to Luton, the canal was never completed beyond Ipswich except for a three mile isolated section from Northton to Erewash. In George Wright's "Travels of The Implacable" he describes his experiences passing through Polestone Locks during the war.
