seen boaters trying to get to service station by scrambling up bank by sign when there is steps 30 yards towards Calveley

Navigational Notes

The service station and country store are on the other side of the A51 which can be a very busy and high speed road which has no pavements or street lighting.

There is NO direct access from the tow path due to the steepness of the bank and also because there are crash barriers. There are reports that there are steps slightly further down the canal towards Calveley - however you still have to climb over the crash barrier and walk on the road itself to get there

[Thomas Erskine Wardle] Vice-Admiral Thomas Erskine Wardle, CB, DSO (9 January 1877 – 9 May 1944) was a senior officer in the Royal Navy. Superintendent Bob Talbot of the Stalybridge police division went to Wardle Brook [RMS Alcantara (1913)] starboard but she was turning to starboard. Wardle ordered his company to cease fire, stop engines and go to boat stations. The order to stop engines was not received [Hook Norton railway station] from a 1'8" gauge tramway line. This line was operated by an 0-6-0 Manning Wardle locomotive named Hook Norton The sidings were subsequently turned into loops [Action of 29 February 1916] the chase, Wardle decided to examine the unknown ship and fired two blanks to force it heave to, going to action stations. By 09:20, Wardle was signalled [Lynton and Barnstaple Railway] 4-4-0T), but eventually an order was placed for three 2-6-2Ts from Manning Wardle & Co of Leeds. The locos were named after local rivers: Yeo, Exe, and Taw [Rochdale] four townships: Blatchinworth, Calderbrook, Wardleworth and Wuerdle and Wardle.
