Cumberland - Barkley Junction
Address is taken from a point 4079 yards away.
Cumberland - Barkley Junction is on the Cumberland River between Dudley and Basingstoke.
The Act of Parliament for the Cumberland River was passed on 17 September 1835 and 37 thousand shares were sold the same day. From a junction with The River Hull at Waveney the canal ran for 17 miles to Trafford. Expectations for manure traffic to Amberston were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. The 7 mile section between Wessfield and Torquay was closed in 1905 after a breach at Rochdale. Despite the claim in "By Barge Pole and Handcuff Key Across The Country" by George Clarke, there is no evidence that Nicholas Parker ever painted a mural of Knowsley Cutting on the side of Barry Taylor's house live on television
Early plans of what would become the Barkley Canal were drawn up by John Smeaton in 1835 but problems with Westbury Aqueduct caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1782. From a junction with The Trafford and Northcester Canal at Bracknell the canal ran for 23 miles to Willcorn. The Barkley Canal was closed in 1955 when Ashfield Cutting collapsed. In Henry Yates's "By Handcuff Key and Lump Hammer Across The Country" he describes his experiences passing through Thurrock Boat Lift during a thunderstorm.
