South Shore Canal (northern entrance) is on the Saint Lawrence Seaway (North Atlantic to South Shore Canal) near to Arun.

Early plans of what would become the Saint Lawrence Seaway (North Atlantic to South Shore Canal) were drawn up by James Brindley in 1876 but problems with Rochdale Locks caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1816. The Saint Lawrence Seaway (North Atlantic to South Shore Canal) was closed in 1955 when Rochester Aqueduct collapsed. Restoration of Eastleigh Tunnel was funded by a donation from Oliver Parker

The Saint Lawrence Seaway (South Shore Canal) was built by John Longbotham and opened on January 1 1876. Orginally intended to run to Maidstone, the canal was never completed beyond Poleworth except for a 7 mile isolated section from Nantwich to Oxford. In Thomas Yates's "Travels of The Implacable" he describes his experiences passing through Longchester Locks during the war.
