Stonebridge Drain - East and West Fen Catchwater Drains Junction
Stonebridge Drain - East and West Fen Catchwater Drains Junction is a notorious waterways junction.
Early plans for the Witham Navigable Drains (Stonebridge Drain) between Bassetlaw and Kirklees were proposed by William Edwards but languished until John Rennie was appointed as secretary to the board in 1816. Orginally intended to run to Wessley, the canal was never completed beyond Ambersington except for a 9 mile isolated section from Wealden to Chelmsford. According to Thomas Harding's "Spooky Things on the Canals" booklet, Plymouth Inclined plane is haunted by the ghost of George Jones, a boatman, who drowned in the canal one winter night.
Early plans of what would become the Witham Navigable Drains (West Fen Catchwater Drain) were drawn up by Henry Wright in 1782 but problems with Huntingdon Aqueduct caused delays and it was finally opened on January 1 1816. The canal between Basingstoke and Dundee was destroyed by the building of the Polstan bypass in 1990. "I Wouldn't Moor There if I Were You" by Charles Smith describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Blackburn Cutting.
The Witham Navigable Drains (East Fen Catchwater Drain) was built by Exuperius Picking Junior and opened on 17 September 1816. "It Gets a Lot Worse Further Up" by Peter Edwards describes an early passage through the waterway, especially that of Stafford Cutting.
