An interesting feature on the outside of the pub is the historic advert for Woodbine cigarettes. ![Castles of Leinster: Carlow, Co. Carlow (1). The castle is in the centre of the town with full public access. Only the western half of what was once a large keep survives, the two remaining towers and connecting curtain wall having escaped the demolition attempt in the C19 to build a lunatic asylum on the site. The keep was probably the work of William Marshal in c.1208-13. It was later held by the Bigod earls of Norfolk and their successors the Howards until confiscation in the 1530s. It endured further attacks over the centuries, changing hands several times before the last onslaught and eventual surrender to Cromwell's General Ireton in 1650. It was eventually returned to the Earl of Thomond in more peaceful times and was later held by the Hamiltons.[[2495062]] by Mike Searle – 13 June 2011](https://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/02/49/50/2495056_3fae4021_120x120.jpg)
