![Castles of Munster: Cashlaunnacorran, Clare (1). Cashlaunnacorran Castle is situated on the western tip of St Thomas Island. The name means Castle of the Weir, so called as it is situated on a rock in the Shannon alongside a salmon weir. It dates from around 1600-20, and has gunloops under the windows. The now blocked pointed entrance on the south side is set above the level of the river to allow for high tides. The castle was abandoned by its garrison after it was struck by cannonfire during the 1690 Siege of Limerick.
