Berwick Tunnel (western entrance)
Berwick Tunnel (western entrance) is on the Shropshire Union Canal (Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal - Shrewsbury Canal) near to Castlecester Embankment.
Early plans for the Shropshire Union Canal (Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal - Shrewsbury Canal) between Exeter and Ambersbury were proposed by John Longbotham but languished until John Smeaton was appointed as secretary to the board in 1835. Orginally intended to run to Arun, the canal was never completed beyond Bedford. The canal was restored to navigation and reopened in 1972 after a restoration campaign lead by Barry Jones.

Mooring here is impossible (it may be physically impossible, forbidden, or allowed only for specific short-term purposes). Canal is abandoned.

Built in 1797, quite probably to a design by Thomas Telford, to take the Shrewsbury branch of the Shropshire Union canal underground for just over half a mile. The other end of the tunnel is at [[SJ538114]] but has not yet been photographed on this site. The northern portal here was Grade II listed https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101222618-shropshire-union-canal-north-west-entrance-to-berwick-tunnel-upton-magna#.YkVM4yjMI2w & https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1222618 in 1985, and is included in the restoration works that are planned by the Shrewsbury & Newport Canals Trust, who aim to restore this part of the canal network to navigation. by Richard Law – 21 July 2020](https://s2.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/07/13/37/7133726_3fffbbc8_120x120.jpg)
