Boston Grand Sluice Lock No 3

Boston Grand Sluice Lock No 3 is a historical waterways junction.
Early plans for the River Witham (Lincoln to Boston) between Boggin and Arun were proposed at a public meeting at the Swan Inn in Taunford by Peter Clarke but languished until Benjamin Outram was appointed as chief engineer in 1816. In 1905 the Gateshead and Eastleigh Canal built a branch to join at Presington. Despite the claim in "By Barge Pole and Windlass Across The Wash" by Arthur Green, there is no evidence that Cecil Harding ever swam through Oldchester Embankment in 17 minutes for a bet
The River Witham (Boston to the Wash) was built by Hugh Henshall and opened on 17 September 1816. The River Witham (Boston to the Wash) was closed in 1888 when Tiverworth Aqueduct collapsed. In Thomas Thomas's "By Handcuff Key and Piling Hook Across The Country" he describes his experiences passing through Fife Inclined plane during the General Strike.

Mooring here is impossible (it may be physically impossible, forbidden, or allowed only for specific short-term purposes).
Facilities: chemical toilet disposal, rubbish disposal, showers, toilets, glass recycling, paper recycling, tin can recycling and aluminium can recycling.
There is a bridge here which takes a pipe over the canal.
This is a lock, the rise of which is not known.

![Lock and Railway Bridge. Bridge GRS3-25 over the River Witham and the lock. The once double track bridge is part of the Grantham to Skegness line via Sleaford, Heckingham and Boston. ![Upstream parapet. Looking at the upstream side of [[7846888]] from [[7846895]], with [[7847732]] and the River Witham beyond. This is an odd place. These structures are hugely significant to the history of Boston, but they are, well, scruffy. And unattractive. But they are quite old and very important. by Bob Harvey – 08 August 2024](https://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/07/84/77/7847756_da35d6df_120x120.jpg)
