[Bridgewater Canal] September 1761, with his assistant Hugh Oldham, Brindley surveyed an extension from Longford Bridge to Hempstones, near Halton, Cheshire. He assisted [Sydney Harbour Bridge] architect Robert Brindley proposed that a floating bridge be built. Engineer Peter Henderson produced one of the earliest known drawings of a bridge across the [Trent and Mersey Canal] Josiah Wedgwood cut the first sod of soil. James Brindley was employed as engineer and work got under way." Six years before the complete opening of the [Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal] with the Trent and Mersey Canal at Haywood Junction by Great Haywood. James Brindley was the chief engineer of the canal, which was part of his "Grand Cross" [Leeds and Liverpool Canal] as too expensive, mainly because of the valley crossing at Burnley. James Brindley was called in to arbitrate, and ruled in favour of Longbotham's more [BCN Main Line] Black Country. They commissioned the canal engineer James Brindley to propose a route. Brindley came back with a largely level but meandering route via [Coventry Canal] Canal" (see History). The Coventry Canal Company was formed in 1768. James Brindley was commissioned to build the canal, and work started on it in December [Barton Aqueduct] in the historic county of Lancashire, England.
