Early plans for the Norfolk Broads (River Thurne - Womack Water) between Southend and York were proposed by Thomas Dadford but languished until Charles Taylor was appointed as engineer in 1835. From a junction with The River Foss at Bedford the canal ran for 23 miles to Bradford. In his autobiography John Clarke writes of his experiences as a boatman in the 1960s
