The distance shown between Walsall Junction and Walsall Town Wharf is 1 mile. In reality it's probably less than a quarter of a mile.

Is it that from the Junction to the Wharf should actually be a separate canal (Walsall Town Arm)? with the length of the main canal adjusted accordingly?

jpegg

No. I think you've got it correct that the Walsall Canal runs from Ryder's Green Junction to Walsall Town Basin and that Walsall Locks are part of the Walsall Junction Canal. Technically the Walsall Junction Canal runs from Walsall Junction only as far as Birchills Wharf rather than to Birchills Junction; the section from Birchills Junction to Birchills Wharf was a pre-existing arm of the Wyrley & Essington.

I think it's just that the distances between Walsall Junction and Walsall Town Wharf need amending. (Could it be you've taken the overall length of the canal from a source that has wrongly defined it's limits?).

Google's length is 515yds (471m)
I can't find the distance tables to change it.

Distance tables only do the whole canal don't they - with CP working out the intermediate distances.. Nick will know.... But as you say the overall distance of a canal seems to have vanished off the edit screen

Shultzy

The distance tables usually have intermediate sections. Do you know how the distances were calculated prior to \"Google Maps\", were they just taken from BW or CRT records?

The original distances were taken from Jim Shead's pages, which unfortunately seem to have vanished from the web.   He took most of these from the original Bradshaws as far as I know.

Best reference I can find at the moment is here:

It's on the wayback machine: here for example:

As I've noted on the other thread I need to restore distance table editing.  That's fairly easy and if I wasn't in an all day Conference today I'd be doing it.

You can now edit distance tables for waterways, but note that you may have to do a refresh on the page to make it generate the appropriate menu item.

Thanks and I've amended the [Walsall Junction] to [Walsall Town Wharf] distance.
