The functions here are for extending the network or adding entirely new waterways and for making bulk changes across many places. Most changes to existing waterways (adding and removing places, re-ordering places, changing distances and lock counts) and to individual places can be made using the normal editing features available from the place and waterway gazetteers.

What the functions available here do, that there is no other way of doing, is to create entirely new and unconnected waterways, and to add new waterways connected to existing ones. The key thing to remember is to do as little editing here, and to do everything you possibly can elsewhere.

For those editors who are uploading a vast amount of data on new waterways, creating a spreadsheet or document with all the elements of the waterways, distances, lock/bridge names and junctions will help with the "wider picture". This will help in avoiding difficulties with incorrect canal lengths, non-connecting junctions and locks in the wrong places.

Names of places on the system should reflect the language of the country that the place is in, with the English version in the sub-heading.

To add a waterway that is a branch of an existing one:

• Use Add an isolated place to create a place for the extreme end (the limit of navigation) on the waterway. Do not add any intermediate places.

• then use Add a waterway to add the new waterway between the existing place on the main system (using the left-hand column) and the new place you have just created (using the right-hand column) with the necessary total distance and locks.

• then leave this page, visit the places and the waterways in the gazetteer, and add all missing detail and any intermediate places you want.

To add an entirely separate waterway – either a small isolated one, or the very first part of a network – use add an isolated place twice to create the two ends of the waterway and then link them using add a waterway.

To add a new waterway linking two existing ones (a newly opened link perhaps) you will only need to use add a waterway.

To change a property for many places based on their name use bulk edit of places

• Add an isolated place — This allows you to add a place to the database that is not part of any existing waterway. It creates the ends of waterways that are to be added. It should not be used for any other purpose (use the "add place" option from the gazetteer to add a new place between existing places). These unlinked places should be connected into waterways as soon as possible - they are likely to get deleted if left unlinked for too long. Unlinked places cannot be edited or have photos or POI data or anything else added to them until they are linked into a waterway.
• Place Name — Enter the name the place will be known by, including any lock or bridge number eg. New Lock No 5.
• Extra — Optional field - use for a single line of extra information about the place. For example Large boats must turn half a mile downstream or Current head of navigation, extension to Little Blithering planned
• Zoom to place — Click on the map to set the location, enter a name in the box, or the co-ordinates of the place. You can drag the marker to adjust it if you don't get it right first time. Once you have it approximately right, zoom in and tweak it. When finished click Do it to save and return to Major Edit or Cancel to discard and return to the Home Screen.

• Add a waterway — This option allows the creation of a new waterway. To add a waterway two end points are needed. Once this has been done new places can be added between them to flesh out the detail. Similarly, later editing can be used to add to the master distance table, to set the exact dimensions of the waterway, to connect it with any waterways networks it is a part of and to set the direction the locks face.
  If both end points of the new canal already exist (ie, it links two existing waterways) then just enter the place IDs below. If one or both ends of the canal are not part of an existing waterway you must use the add isolated place function above first to create them.
• The complete name of the new waterway — This should stand alone and is what is displayed on the gazetteer pages for all places on the waterway - for example "Leeds and Liverpool Canal (Main Line - Liverpool to Wigan)".
• The simple name of the new waterway — This is the final part of the name and is used when selecting the place - for example "Rufford Branch" or - in the example above - "Liverpool to Wigan"
• Place at one end of new waterway — Either enter the CanalPlan ID, select Find or select a previous isolated place from the drop-down list.
• Place for the other end of new waterway— Either enter the CanalPlan ID, select Find or select a previous isolated place from the drop-down list.

• narrow canal
• broad canal
• commercial waterway
• small river
• large river
• lake
• tidal river
• seaway
• Distance from end-to-end — Enter the total length of the waterway. This should be the actual length and not the "as the crow flies" length. This can be calculated by using the Google Maps distance calculator (on the right click menu) or one of the many distance calculators available on the web.
• Total locks on the waterway — Enter the total number of locks on the waterway if known or zero if not known or there are none. Locks should be added as soon as possible after waterway creation as they affect the [plan a route] timings. All other physical features, such as bridges, aqueducts, tunnels etc. should be added at leisure later and on completion of these the map can be given final shape by adding the marker places.

• Reorganise waterways— This page lists the structure of waterways with each section of a canal or river as a separate sub section of the canal or river it connects to.
  The example below shows how the Aire and Calder Navigation fits into database hierarchy.

  It can be seen above that the Aire and Calder Navigation is split into five sections with the Aire and Calder Navigation (Main Line) split into a further two sections. The square braces [[]] denote the section name displayed on the waterways main gazetteer page.
  Levels with a + sign indicate a further level below.
  Waterways can be moved by dragging an entry to a new location.
  Right click on an entry to open a menu to rename an entry.
• Add or edit a cruising ring —
• Bulk edit of places — This option allows the changing of attributes of a large number of places based on their name. For example, it can be used (and was created for that purpose) to mark all weirs or mileposts as having that property. At present it only allows for that sort of edit, but it could easily be extended to others (such as size of place). Raise an issue if you can see a useful purpose behind doing that and I'll implement it.
  Enter the search pattern. Use % to represent any number of unknown characters (including none at all) and _ to represent a single unknown character. Searches do not pay any attention to whether letters are capital or lower case. For example, to find all places with "weir" in the name you would use %weir%. If you find a need for more sophisticated search syntax (regular expressions, or for example) please raise an issue saying what you are trying to do.
  
• Page heading is — Bulk edit of places matching %search pattern%.
• Choose the places you want to change the properties of, or Choose all, Clear all as appropriate.
• Select the properties you want changing for the chosen places by Setting, Clearing or Leave unchanged as appropriate.
• Regenerate Database — This option regenerates the database, including the waterway maps and gazetteer. The screen returns to Major Edit with the message The database has been regenerated at the top of the screen.
• Add, delete or edit a book — This option allows the creation of books and guides which can be added to the waterways gazetteer entry.
• Sections are Waterway Travels, Waterway Guides, and Waterway Histories. New book or Edit gives the following sections which can be edited or added to.

• Abstract
• Show shows the waterways covered by the guide, by map and text.
• Add and edit Navigation Authorities — This option allows Edit or Add new authority details which can be added to the waterways gazetteer entry.
• Name
