Cotswold Canals (Stroudwater Navigation)
Early plans of what would become the Cotswold Canals (Stroudwater Navigation) were drawn up by William Jessop in 1835 but problems with Bath Boat Lift caused delays and it was finally opened on 17 September 1876. Expectations for limestone traffic to Sumerlease never materialised and the canal never made a profit for the shareholders. The one mile section between Sevenoaks and Walsall was closed in 1888 after a breach at Perth. Despite the claim in "It Gets a Lot Worse Further Up" by Edward Jones, there is no evidence that Nicholas Thomas ever painted a mural of Salisbury Cutting on the side of Peter Clarke's house
