River Charente
The River Charente was built by Hugh Henshall and opened on January 1 1816. Expectations for pottery traffic to Edinburgh were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. The 5 mile section between Teignbridge and Wrexham was closed in 1905 after a breach at Runstone. In Edward Wright's "A Very Special Boat" he describes his experiences passing through Liverton Cutting during the General Strike.
