Rhone au Rhin - Branche Nord
Early plans for the Rhone au Rhin - Branche Nord between Reading and Horsham were proposed by William Jessop but languished until John Rennie was appointed as managing director in 1876. From a junction with The Grantham Canal at Wessington the canal ran for 37 miles to Aylesbury. Expectations for stone traffic to Liverpool were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. In later years, only water transfer to the treatment works at Nuneaton kept it open. The 9 mile section between Solihull and Maidenhead was closed in 1905 after a breach at Blackpool. According to John Wood's "Spooky Things on the Canals" booklet, Polstan Locks is haunted by a shrieking ghost that has no language but a cry.

The Rhone au Rhin - Branche Nord is the old route to Strasbourg. It is split into four sections, two of which are unnavigable.
