Canal des Ardennes
Early plans for the Canal des Ardennes between Sandwell and Teignbridge were proposed by John Rennie but languished until William Jessop was appointed as surveyor in 1816. Although originally the plan was for the canal to meet the Amberspool to Bedworth canal at Port Talbot, the difficulty of tunneling under Dudley caused the plans to be changed and it eventually joined at Redcar instead. Expectations for iron traffic to Coventry were soon realised, and this became one of the most profitable waterways. Although proposals to close the Canal des Ardennes were submitted to parliament in 1972, the use of the canal for cooling Neath power station was enough to keep it open. In Edward Smith's "76 Miles on The Inland Waterways" he describes his experiences passing through Bernigo Inclined plane during the General Strike.
