Prior to shortening to speed up passage the Oxford canal was a contour hugging canal. At this point it headed off to the left (you can sort of see a gap between the left tree and the bush at the left of the picture). The route is still visible and the immediate section at the other side of the towpath is still in water (used by fishermen, though I'm not sure how the fish get in!). If walking along the towpath you can get to it via a footpath near Bridge 98.
