Does this lock have an official name? Besides the above it is also called: - "Stratford-upon-Avon Lock No 56"; "Stratford Wide Lock"; "Stratford Barge Lock"; "Barge Lock 56" plus a number of other variations. This lock not only seems to have an identity problem but also gets misplaced.
The Stratford upon Avon Canal Society states that " ... the completed canal was opened at its junction with the River Avon at Stratford on 24th June 1816 and ... included 56 locks" . My copy of Nicholson's (1991 - a bit out of date) states that the Stratford Canal has 54 locks - okay they most likely didn't include Lock 20 because it is on the link to the GU but what happened to the other lock - did they forget poor old Lock No. 56?
