Close-up of the unusual Calder and Hebble lock gear

With this arrangement, you turn the spindle about a quarter of a turn, take it out, do it again... At least the teeth are quite large, and apparently it's OK just to drop the paddle to close it. This one's a ground paddle, though you find them on gates too.
